Privacy notice
This notice explains how FruitProbe ("we", "the desk") handles personal information collected through fruitprobe.com. We operate from Australia and follow the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles. The independent regulator is the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).
Who is responsible
FruitProbe is the entity that decides how and why personal information on this site is handled. For any privacy question, correction or removal request, write to desk@fruitprobe.com. We reply within three business days and complete most requests within 30 days.
What we collect
- Technical log data. Our hosting provider records the IP address, browser user agent, requested address, referring page and time of each request.
- Cookies and local storage. Small files that keep your cookie choice and support audience measurement. The categories and durations are listed in the cookie notice.
- Audience measurement. Aggregated statistics about pages viewed, approximate region and device type.
- Advertising identifiers. Where an advertising partner serves or measures a promotional link, it may set its own identifier in your browser.
- Newsletter form data. The email address you enter, the optional name, and the fact and time of your agreement. There is no telephone field anywhere on this site and we never ask for one.
- Push notification identifiers. If you allow browser notifications, OneSignal creates a subscription identifier for your browser and links it to the email address you supplied.
- Reader plan requests. If you ask to be placed on the list for a paid plan, we keep your email address and the plan you named.
Why we hold it and on what basis
- To run and secure the site. Log data is needed to deliver pages and to detect abuse. Basis: our legitimate business interest in operating a functioning site.
- To send the newsletter and push messages. Basis: your agreement, given by ticking the consent box and, for push, by allowing notifications in your browser.
- To measure the audience and improve the editorial shelf. Basis: your agreement to the analytics category of cookies.
- To show and measure advertising. Basis: your agreement to the advertising category of cookies.
- To prepare paid reader plans. Basis: taking steps at your request before a plan starts.
We do not sell personal information, we do not build profiles for third parties, and we do not use your data to make automated decisions with legal effect.
How long we keep it
- Server log data: up to 12 months, then deleted or aggregated.
- Newsletter address and consent record: until you unsubscribe or ask for removal, plus up to 12 months as proof that consent existed.
- Push subscription identifier: until you turn notifications off for this site or the subscription expires.
- Cookies and local storage: for the periods listed in the cookie notice.
- Plan waiting list entries: until the plan starts or you ask to be taken off the list.
Who else handles the data
We use a small number of service providers, each acting on our instructions:
- Hosting and content delivery. Serving the pages and protecting them from abuse; handles log data.
- OneSignal. Push notification and newsletter delivery; handles your email address, optional name, tags (site name and source of the sign-up) and the push identifier.
- Audience measurement. Aggregated site statistics.
- Advertising partners. Delivery and measurement of promotional links.
- Payment provider. Once paid plans open, billing will be handled by a specialised provider. Card details would be entered on that provider's own systems; we would never hold them. Today no such data is collected on this site.
Some of these providers store data on servers outside Australia, including in the United States and the European Union. Where that happens, we take reasonable steps to ensure the recipient handles the information in a way consistent with the Australian Privacy Principles.
Your rights
- Ask what personal information we hold about you and receive a copy.
- Ask us to correct information that is inaccurate, out of date or incomplete.
- Ask us to delete your newsletter address, your push identifier or your plan request.
- Revoke your agreement at any time: use the unsubscribe link in any email, or turn notifications off in your browser. Revoking consent does not affect processing that already happened.
- Complain to us first, so we can fix the problem. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you may complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner through oaic.gov.au.
Security
The site is served over an encrypted connection. Access to the newsletter list is limited to the editors who need it, and provider accounts are protected with strong authentication. No online service can promise perfect security, but we take reasonable steps proportionate to the small amount of data we hold.
Children
The site is written for a general adult audience and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from a child. If you believe a child has sent us their details, write to the desk and we will remove them.
Changes to this notice
If our providers or purposes change, we update this page and change the date at the top. Substantial changes to the newsletter or to paid plans are also announced by email before they take effect.
